Tahlequah Daily Press: Girl Scouts give back to emergency personnel

"It's been at least 25 years and we only missed one year because of bad weather," said Cheryl Overacker.

Overacker has been a part of the Girl Scouts of Eastern Oklahoma Cherokee Service Unit for a few decades, and it was her and her co-leader at the time, Tonya Smith, who began the New Year's Eve service project.

Smith and her family had just moved to Cherokee County after living on a military base in Mississippi, and Overacker recalls that Smith had been doing a similar project before they moved. The leaders decided to open up the project to all troops in the service unit.
