Girl Scouts Beyond Bars

Girl Scouts Beyond Bars restores families separated by incarceration, prevents juvenile delinquency and breaks the cycle of intergenerational incarceration. Visiting a different correctional facility each week, this program provides the opportunity for girls to participate in the life-changing lessons of Girl Scouts and for siblings to tagalong too. It is the only program which transports children to see their mothers. In addition, our trained staff works with the incarcerated mothers to provide nurturing parenting, victim impact and Girl Scout volunteer training to help strengthen their parent-child bonds.

Girl Scouts becomes a bridge and something to share together beyond the trauma of separation. Most importantly, it is sometimes the one chance a month siblings have to see each other when their family is separated as a result of the mother's incarceration. Because of the relationships built during incarceration, Girl Scouts maintains the bond with both the mother and child post-release and are able to provide intervention and resources as needed.

  • Over 30,000 Oklahoma children each year face life with a parent in prison.
  • 55% of children with incarcerated mother have never visited their mother in prison.
  • Children who participate in GSBB and community troops have opportunities to engage with Girl Scouts six times per month.
  • Children who participate in GSBB have opportunities to visit their mothers up to ten times per year.
