Earning the Girl Scout Gold Award is a rare achievement on its own. Pair that with the Eagle Scout rank (earned through Scouting America), and you have a milestone very few young leaders will ever reach. Gold Award Girl Scout Roma Allen has done both, setting a powerful example of what dedication, creativity, and service can accomplish.
For her Gold Award project, “Paper Making,” Roma tackled the issue of paper waste at her high school by teaching classmates how to transform old assignments into handmade seed paper embedded with native Oklahoma plants. She researched papermaking techniques, built 35 screens by hand, and designed a hands-on curriculum that’s now part of Union High School’s botany program. Her project not only reduced waste but also educated students about the value of native plants—creating a lasting impact for years to come.
Roma’s Eagle Scout project expanded her leadership beyond the classroom. She created enrichment devices for residents at a local memory care facility, providing mental, sensory, and emotional support to improve their daily lives.
Her accomplishments don’t stop there. Roma maintains a 4.9 GPA through Union’s EDGE program, where she’ll graduate with both a high school diploma and an AA in Liberal Arts. She plans to study biomedical engineering and continue finding ways to improve lives through innovation.
Roma also embraces her Alaska Native heritage as a proud member of the Wrangell Cooperative Association. From designing custom regalia to participating in cultural events, she actively shares traditions and helps preserve her community’s history.
Roma’s journey reflects leadership, resilience, and heart. Whether through sustainable education, community service, or cultural pride, she inspires those around her and reminds us of the power of young leaders to create meaningful change.
Congratulations, Roma, on your incredible achievements—we can’t wait to see what you’ll do next!
