In response to the concerning decline in education and literacy rates across Oklahoma, coupled with a shortage of books in homes and role models for young learners, Jillian embarked on a transformative mission to reignite a passion for reading within her community. Armed with a deep understanding of the leading causes of illiteracy in young children and effective intervention strategies, Jillian collaborated closely with Coweta Public Schools to conceive, plan, and execute the innovative Walk-through Literacy program.
Rooted in meticulously researched lesson plans and tailored to the specific needs of elementary students, the program comprised four distinct events, each themed to engage and captivate young readers. Through a series of engaging reading stations, students were guided on a journey of exploration and discovery, fostering a love for literacy, and instilling essential reading skills.
To ensure the sustainability and widespread impact of her initiative, Jillian implemented strategic measures to support ongoing literacy efforts within Coweta Public Schools. By supplying StoryWalks to elementary librarians and providing comprehensive lesson plans and materials for free distribution on Teachers Pay Teachers, Jillian empowered educators to continue fostering a culture of literacy long after the conclusion of her project.
Jillian has been a Girl Scout for 9 years with Troop 986. She will graduate in May 2024 and plans to major in Communications. With this degree she hopes to advocate for children either by going into the classroom to educate students in drama and communications, by helping inform the public of information as an Investigative Journalist, or by continuing to Law School to become a Child Advocate Attorney.
