After recognizing a critical gap in school safety procedures, Tulsa Girl Scout Laurin B. took the lead on a project designed to protect students during one of the most overlooked parts of the day—after school.
While most schools have established emergency protocols for regular class hours, Laurin noticed that after-school programs often don’t have the same level of preparation or support. That realization led her to create a set of customized emergency response plans for a local elementary school, specifically addressing fire, tornado, and intruder situations that might arise when fewer staff members are present and routines vary.
Her approach was thoughtful and comprehensive. Laurin developed evacuation maps tailored to each type of emergency, designed step-by-step safety guides in bright, kid-friendly formats, and considered how best to keep young students calm and informed. Beyond creating the materials, she also led trainings with both students and after-school staff, walking them through the procedures and answering questions to ensure the plans would be effective in a real situation.
Laurin’s project reflects a deep sense of responsibility, leadership, and compassion—and it fills an important need that extends beyond a single school. By identifying a nationwide issue and addressing it on a local level, she created a model that other schools and programs could adapt in the future.
